Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is a counseling strategy aimed at helping patient build motivation to make a change in their life.

Motivational Interviewing is effective in helping patients who are ambivalent about change.

Motivational interviewing is about collaboration and evoking for change that already exists within the client.

Motivational Interviewing recognizes that change is up to the client and only through an exploration of the client’s own desires and wishes can that motivation be built.

Motivational Interviewing includes four guiding principles

  • Expression of empathy
  • Development of discrepancy between behavior and values
  • Rolling with changes in motivation or goals
  • Supporting efficacy
