Therapist Spotlight: Shadow
I am a 5-year-old miniature Husky. My family adopted me when I was only six weeks old for my owner who was six years old. As a pup, I really struggled with behavior problems. In my mind, what was the big deal if I ate a pillow or two? With a little love and some behavior management strategies, doggo therapy really changed my life. That is why I want to give back and be a therapy dog myself. I have two best friends. I call them the “Siamese twins.” They are Siamese cats. In the beginning, we really did not get along. Okay, okay… so, I got a bit rough in my play. Therapy taught me to be gentler and develop deeper connections. I still love to run and play. Even though I’m a bit heavy, my mommy lets me act like a lap dog from time to time. If you are in session with me, you can expect that I will come sit beside you and give you kisses.
What Do You Like Most About Working at Evolution of Self?
Dude! The treats and the pets are endless!! People love on me all day long. Plus, I really love that I get to be out of the house for the day.
What is a Career Highlight or Success?
I’m pretty new to this game. I just got my Canine Good Citizens certification, so that was an accomplishment (can you believe I got points taken off for not “leaving” the treat on the floor? Okay, okay, I snatched that right up, but it looked YUMMY— and it was!!!!) As far as my work, I jumped up on the couch and laid my head down on a patient’s lap right when they needed a hug. Nailed it!
What Motivates You?
So, hear me out guys. My mom kept me on this “healthy food” diet until I started training. Suddenly, treats were coming out the wazoo! I just can’t say enough about the treats! Actually, I really enjoy being a part of the workday and interacting with others who love on me and just light up when I come into the room. Those treats though….
What is your favorite color?
Well, I’m a little color-blind, so I have limited options. But I guess I would say blue.
If you were an animal, what animal would you be and why?
A smaller dog. I was born to be a lap dog!
What is one thing that you would like to accomplish in your lifetime?
I’m going to run for president one day! I’ve already started on my campaign!!
What would be your dream vacation?
I absolutely LOVE when we go camping. So much room to run around! So many smells to check out. If I’m lucky, there’s a squirrel just begging for me to chase him!
What is your guilty pleasure?
Being matchy-matchy with my bestie!!
“I’ve been seeing my therapist for some time now, but Shadow has only been coming for a short time. Since he has started, I find myself walking into the building looking for him. He is so soft and friendly. He always gives me kisses and sits down right beside me. It just makes my sessions feel so “at home.” I just love having him around. Plus, he is absolutely adorable.”

“Don’t get me wrong. The therapists are great, but seeing Shadow in the office really changes my mood. It makes for a great session. He will come and sit down beside me and just rests his head.”
"Shadow helps me feel safer in the therapeutic space. There is less judgment and shame when Shadow is around. His unconditional support helps me say things to Shadow that I am not able to share with my therapist (yet)! Plus, sweet doggie cuddles really help me learn touch— not all touch has to hurt. Thank you, Shadow!!
What are Colleagues Saying About Shadow?
